I suppose this is mostly for Reed, but if someone else knows the answer that's cool as well. If a panel one has written becomes a dustcatcher, is that game removed from one's total number of games? I would suspect so, but I don't know how the background program works. Thanks!
I just spotted one caption of mine that got dustcatchered, but can't be sure I'm keeping count accurately. I would tend to assume, though, that it no longer appears as one of those listed as "in progress" for me. I have to assume that the image I captioned re-entered the rotation, if there were no programming glitches. Guessing this was implemented somewhere in the last few hours, given that my caption was written sometime this morning.
Same with mine ebbixx. Funny thing is I didn't think it was too obtuse (I'm pretty sure I've done worse. ;). Apparently the other players thought otherwise. :D
Kind of weird. I have two, but they were both written today. I guess the catcher does not account for time, only number of skips.
Given that it's new, I'm sure it will need some tweaking.
Mine was "Olympic torchbearer & redshirt, Gorn"
Maybe complicated, but within the space available as close as I could come to an accurate description of the image that inspired it. I was kind of looking forward to seeing an eventual response, but apparently no one felt like taking it on, maybe because it was so specific?
My "Deadmau5 gets Rickrolled" went to the dustbin. I guess not many people have heard of Deadmau5. I hadn't, myself, until a couple of months ago (thanks to Drawception, ironically.)
Man, if this many things are getting dust catchered, I have to wonder if the amount of skips = dustcatched needs to be tweaked a bit.
While I am certain a "Dustcatcher "feature is needed. Many of the games skipped have the potential to become great.
I just logged in and looked at the selection for about 25 panels. 20 or so of them had to do with either Nyan cat or Trouble Muffin. I certainly hope the game doesnt get "dumbed" down to the lowest common denominator.
Sometimes a more challenging panel is simply waiting for the right person to log on and see it.
I can definitely confirm now that the count gets decremented when a caption is dustbinned. From one click to the next my games in progress went from 10 to 9 and another caption (entered within the past hour or so) hit the dustcatcher.
Given that this is affecting captions only (I assume) and that the intent of the new feature is to improve turnaround, it seems fair enough. It may have some effect on how witty or specific people try to get.
One suggestion to help users finetune their approach to captioning, though, might be to link to the finished game once it gets finished. For all I know, considering how new this is, that may already be something that's been implemented?
@Payne N Diaz - The games you're looking at were almost certainly finished before the dustcatcher went into effect. Those have been extremely popular for at least a few weeks from what I can tell, Nyancat probably longer (Trouble Muffin is an inside joke that turned into a local meme).
You might in fact find that some of those captions get Dustbustered, in fact, if it turns out a lot of people choose to reject them based on boredom. No way I would predict right now, considering this was implemented sometime in the last 12 hours or so.
Wow, so I added a caption, "Jersey Shore is not accepting auditions" Dustcatchered within something lie 15 minutes! I certainly could have put in a mindless prompt like "Orange man tells buff white man no" . Not complaining so much that I lost what I thought was a clever caption, but I think the algorithm is going to need some refinement.
I have "Hamlet sucks" in the dustcather. (about people throwing tomatos at the play)
I don't think i could put it more simple and short.
this is bad :( I skip lots of descriptions.. not because they are bad.. but because I can't draw them and I keep seeing the same 20 when there are 1K-2K games 0_o how many am I accidently causing to get tossed because I feel I can't draw them?
Look at it from the perspective of if you had to draw your own description. "Jersey Shore is not accepting auditions", "Hamlet sucks", "Deadmau5 gets Rickrolled" and "Olympic torchbearer & redshirt, Gorn" are all difficult.
Grizzdrop, if you can't draw them, then most others probably can't either. It's good they are dropped in that case. Don't worry about it - a lot of different players have to skip a panel before it becomes a dustcatcher.
As one who draws more than captions, Gastón, I have to say I'd probably have skipped that one. I like challenges, but something that is either non-specific, or only suggests that the image described might have been borderline porn, is one I'd be likely to skip.
@Reed - As long as you could draw a reptile head, a red shirt and a torch, mine would have been easy. I guess you might have needed to Google "Gorn" but that's the most cryptic part. Still, I appreciate (and was concerned) that the description was maybe too specific to attract anyone unless they really wanted to draw another Lizard Boy.
Yeah, yours might have been ok without Gorn. ""Olympic torchbearer & redshirt" isn't too bad. But having Gorn on top of that is quite a lot.
Well, my dustcatcher panel (Jersey shore is not accepting auditions) became..... 2 weightlifters posing.

So now I feel that the only way I can add a witty caption that will survive is if it is the final caption, and now that the default is 12 panels (which I actually do prefer), it will be highly unlikely.
I prefer writing captions over drawing. I tend to skip drawn panels that are not interesting to me, and skip most captions unless I have an immediate idea of something I know I can execute, and sometimes when it comes back I'll attempt to draw it.
Right now, I feel really restricted with my style of gaming and I refuse to dumb down the captions if I think I have something clever to write.
Thanks Reed for responding, I hope a happy balance can be achieved!
Can't say I'm a fan. I've gotten the same panel twice today and both times made a Christopher Walken joke…only to find that my caption was removed within the hour. This says to me that people are morons who don't know who Christopher Walken is. If there was a minimum time, maybe it wouldn't look so insulting.
Here is something that I think should be considered as far as the Dustcatcher is concerned. The people playing during this block of time (say four hours from 5-9pm) will be the same subset. Which is a different group of people than those playing from 5-9 am, than those that play from noon - 4 and so on and so on; and that will hold true most every day of the week If school were in session, you would have few of school aged playing during those hours and more of the mature player. These two groups recognize different prompts, respond differently to prompts etc. I think panels should be skip triggered but with a time element to them also so.
Gawd, I know how you feel. I sent one that says "Kesha sucks, crowd punches her" and PBFLT! Down it goes in the dustbin. Come on community, I know your better than that.
