I think that's what people are doing now..
In the games in the "Most underrated draw" thread, most panels have zero points save for one or two.
In games I participate in, no one bothers to give any points to anyone else, unless I start handing them out.
I always see funny panels getting 0 points.
Does anyone else think so?
hahaha, reading the title, i thought you were confessing to something. . . but no! yeah i know what you mean, and some people are probs going to be bad sports no matter what, you know? that being said i find it hard not to give out points where points are due (and i pay attn to captions and mouse/trackpad drawers too)
Yeah, I've definitely noticed that people are much stingier with points now. I've admitted in another thread that levels have brought out a competitive streak in me and makes me less willing to give points, but I am aware that that's not really a good thing and I'm trying to correct for it.
I give out more points to make up for the competitive people being selfish, np. :p
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one.
In this "top game" http://drawception.com/viewgame/w6w2g99A2B/d-from-drawception-is-sexy-for-the-date/
You can see that only 3 panels got points above 40. And the rest mostly below 10.
It doesn't feel inviting at all, I don't really want to play in a hostile environment.
My point-granting method goes like this:
Any individual panel that stands out gets a thumb.
If a whole game is good, I favorite and give a thumb to everyone. It doesn't matter in this instance that every panel isn't a winner. If you're in an awesome game, you deserve a point. I think that's fair.
I often give points to the panel previous to mine and after mine, even in a crappy game. A good prompt and a proper reading of the prompt are equally valued in my eyes.
Obviously the instant good looking drawings will get points from me, but I also try and give points to drawings that not necessarily very good, but you can see that there was some effort put into the drawing and not just trying to get out of the situation with stick-figures and/or only black brush. (Although there can be funny panels with stick-figures as well).
As for captions, I give points to anything that is funny or that shifts the game to something funny.
WHat I don't get is why mine in that top game is getting so many upvotes, it's a pretty ordinary picture with nothing really interesting about it, yet it's getting more votes than panel 14, which is amazing.
I give out tons of points but barely get them even for my great drawings (and yet some of my crappy ones get lots just for being part of a full circle game). I hear that pain..
From a 'not so great' player viewpoint:
I think that game starter panels are overlooked a lot in the games. I give points to folks who had an original and interesting game starter title.
I also like to look at the new games coming down the pipe and give points to the panels who either make me go 'wow', or make me laugh, or (like Jigor) i can see that someone tried hard with their picture.
I draw with the mouse and my drawings are no so great, but I know that other players have given me points because I made an effort on my drawing. It always makes me happy and I try to keep that in mind when I'm looking at other games.
One thing I won't do is give a thumbs up to gruesome drawings or to any drawing that is something horrid about children. One I saw a few folks gave a thumbs up to was a fisherman using his child as an anchor. I won't thumbs up those kinds.
my 2 cents worth.
I give out points constantly. I don't see the point (heh) of not doing so. You don't lose anything for liking a panel. (Come to think of it, didn't they used to be called "likes" rather than "points"? )
Let's not make things competitive, lest elitism show it's ugly head.
Admittedly, I thought this thread was going to be about something... entirely different. Sorry about that. ^^;
Generally, I agree with you, but I've convinced myself that some players within the game may be casual or new; I don't blame them for not giving points to deserving panels as often as I or others do. Best we could do is actively vote to get others' attentions and hopefully they'll find interest to do so as well.
One thing that I think people don't do as often anymore (which sort of contributes to this) is visit new games, not just the ones we participate in. Granted, some of these fly by so fast that they pretty much go under the radar. I try to comment on games that I think are interesting in order to 'flag' what's worth seeing, but there's only so much that could do by itself.
I generally give out full points in every game. Aside from the rare case when panels lack effort, or are trolls. I'm pretty generous with my points. I'll have to remember not to up-vote Taekwondogirl from now on though :P
Oh come on, I said I'm working on it! :p
Oddly enough, before I read this, I made a topic in the suggestion form asking for a "Thumbs All" button. It would be a button that would gives a thumbs up to every panel in the game. I like giving thumbs up to everyone if I like the game, and although it's not a lot of work to do so, I'm quite lazy and thought it would be a cool idea.
Here's a link to my topic : http://drawception.com/forums/suggestions/5073/thumbs-up-all-button/ maybe if some people came over and added on comments and suggestions to it, the drawception overlords would notice it and maybe think of adding it :D
I use the up-vote-them-all bookmark on every single game I visit. Then I remove the thumbs up to panels that are super low effort or almost certainly trying to derail intentionally.
That said, I think I'm starting to understand the burnout that happens to players who have been around 2 months+. I think the comment about upvoting starters triggered this, I apologize in advance.
I'm so sick of some of you game starters. "____ Character Leaves Avengers" has been done, so many times. So, so many times." _____ Joins avengers". Also done to death. Nyan cat, TM, Deadpool vs Spiderman. just stop. Someone else will start them, I promise you.
The problem I have is the sheer repetitiveness, and I have to fully admit its my own problem. Someone logging on for their first time doesnt realize that "Another Brick in the Wall" has been to the point of making me nauseous. I guess the problem is I've seen it all, and I'm playing with people who havent. Its not their fault, or mine... but it really makes me start logging in less and less.
I'm lazy and have a poor memory. That aside I do eventually get to all the games I play, have a good look at:
and give them a point
So if you get a couple points outta nowhere, it's me doing a review.
No matter how good it is, I won't upvote a drawing that has the previous description written on.
I am a very generous voter. You are pretty much guaranteed an up-vote if I am in your game. Generally I start at panel 1 (which, in 90% of cases will get an up-vote simply for starting the game) then read down each panel. I only skip over panels that where A) Just mindless squiggles (without intent) and B) inappropriate, but not so much it warrants a flag.
I have not noticed the stingy voting trend mentioned in this topic though.
I'm used to giving away more points than I receive.
I'm with Darren. I have given probably 5000 thumbs up on this site, and I'm at around 940 myself. No biggie. Spread the love, and it'll come back around.
Just practice your art and make a name for yourself, and you'll do better! :D
