Skipping is not a vote of difficulty. Just because I skip something doesn't mean it's too difficult, usually it's that I just don't want to draw it. Perfectly reasonable descriptions get dustcatchered.
If anything skipping should be removed to force people to draw and to prevent people from seeing multiple panels of the same game and thus being able to "cheat".
Forcing people to draw = people sticking scribbles just to get to something they want to draw.
I agree on the Dustcatcher idea being bad idea, however forcing people to draw is too. Why the heck can't we just wait for someone who might draw the prompt? The game doesn't have to be over in 6 hours! One of my prompts was removed just over 10 minutes ago and I had only typed it about 2 hours before that, and it was a perfectly understandable prompt, "Loki at an LGBT parade" because that's exactly what was in the damn picture.
The current system for determining dustcatchers doesn't seem to be working. My "Ned Stark's worst birthday" caption was called a dustcatcher in less than an hour.
I don't think the idea is bad. I think that its implementation can be tweaked (and as this is a beta, it probably will be). I seen posts where some folks can't play at all because their panels keep getting tossed. I know that I skipped A LOT of panels last night because I was searching for a specific one. I originally started drawing a panel, had some IRL distractions occur, and ultimately ran out of time to finish the drawing, so I had to skip. I hoped to find that panel again and re-draw it. In doing so, I skipped a lot of panels. And I skipped them not necessarily because the descriptions were too difficult/vague (although some of them may have been), but because I was trying to find a specific panel that I had seen earlier. In that case, if any of my skipping contributed to folks losing their panels, that's unfortunate.
I think all panels should be allowed a set amount of time in play before they become eligible for the dustcatcher. I think 24 hours is probably too long, maybe just 6 hours or so.
Overall, it's a great idea at getting rid of panels that people just absolutely can't/won't draw. It just needs some work to function as intended.
I was going to suggest something like an 8 hour minimum, but this is getting kind of ridiculous. About half of the captions I've submitted today have been rejected.
Look, it just went up and it's testing. I am sure when Reed sees how many panels it's dumping, he'll change up he algorithm and get it to the right place.
He's also mentioned perhaps giving higher point bonuses for dustcatchers, which would be cool.
I'm still hoping for a 24 hour safe zone before it starts dustcatching.
That way it gives a load of people a chance to draw it before the amount of skips lead to it being dropped.
Each player also needs a Dustcatcher Graveyard where all their dropped panels go so they can still see them.
Actually, I believe this idea may be quite good if a button that says something like "Too difficult" is implemented, and if you think it's very difficult not just for you, but for most others, then you could click that and if it reaches, say 5 votes, then it can be removed.
"Just because I skip something doesn't mean it's too difficult, usually it's that I just don't want to draw it."
Either reason is valid for a description being dropped. If lots of players are skipping it then that means it's clogging up the queue and forcing everyone to have to hit Skip dozens of times to find something to draw. That's a big problem. Why is your description so special that it should remain in there until an awesome artist, who also happens to feel like drawing your particular description, finds it?
Descriptions need to be vastly simplified so players don't have to hit skip so often, nor feel the need to have to Google the descriptions. You should only have to hit skip a couple times to find something to draw. That hasn't been the case in a long time, so this may be a painful correction...
I'm watching what descriptions are getting dropped and 99% of the time they are difficult. And even if you don't agree with that - well, when most people don't want to draw your description for whatever reason, why should it sit in there making most players skip over it?
I got Dustscratchered, and I think it's a good idea. :/
I think the problem is the apparent speed in which it is dropped.
As we're far removed from seeing what's actually happening, it looks like panels are disappearing very, very quickly.
What happens if there's a group of trolls who just jump on and skip continuously for 10 minutes?
On page 2 of this thread, Reed mentions that even if you skip the same panel 20 times, it only counts once per player, and even alludes to the fact that you have to already be at a certain level in order for your skips to count at all.

This was probably done to address the possible troll concerns.
Though if a large enough group of them (see 9gag/whatever raid), they could get enough skips between them on a ton of panels. That's what Ackter's referring to.
I do think a certain amount of time before something gets dustcatchered would help. Also, sometimes the description is basically the only way it can describe a picture. If someone makes an indescribable drawing, what happens if the description following it keeps getting dustcatchered, then someone else makes a description, it gets dustcatchered, etc.?
The players in that group would have to have a certain amount of points for their skips to count. Exactly how many I don't know...
Not saying it's impossible, but they'll have to do quite a bit of work for their plan to be effective.
And I don't know if we ever want to know exactly how many points one needs for their skips to count O_o
Considering how good the 9gag guys actually are at drawing (well, most of them), they could easily misuse the system if they put some effort in first.
I think at least a minimum time should be implemented, like several hours at least.
@Reed: "Why is your description so special that it should remain in there until an awesome artist, who also happens to feel like drawing your particular description, finds it?"
Here's a problem I see (and I don't know if this has happened already, but it can). Let's say someone draws a picture of a dog. Another person comes across and describes the panel as "A Dog." Now let's say that description isn't compelling enough for the folks browsing the queue, and the panel "A Dog" gets tossed in the dustcatcher.
Okay, so now the dog picture is back in play. Someone sees it, and adds the description "Dog". So now "Dog" is in play. It gets skipped over again, just like "A Dog" did earlier, and eventually ends up in the dustcatcher.
Now we're back to the dog picture. Let's assume this cycle continues for a couple hours until someone finally draws the dog.
Let's look at the original description "A Dog." I don't look at it as being "so special" that it needed to stay in play, nor do I think that it needed to stay in play for an awesome artist to come along and make a dog masterpiece. What it can do is frustrate or demotivate the players who added the description in the first place. They took the time to come here and describe the panel, only to find out a few minutes later their contribution was rejected by an algorithm. They may not want to keep playing.
I think by allowing "A Dog" to stay in circulation for a period of time before being tossed out, it is fair to the player who added it, and it still contributes to improved game flow as it will eventually be dropped out if it goes too long without being drawn.
It's a compromise that addresses the technical issues and the gameplay issues the players are seeing now.
@The Lemur King, we'll see if that ends up happening, but so far I think it's an overblown concern. Nothing as simple as "A dog" is getting dustbin'd.
Here are last 10 that were dropped:
sips watching a man on a bike be killed Troy and Abed in the Moooorning Ed, Edd n Eddy! Pus in a Tube ! an angry Yodel Troll Batderp points at flying stickman Troll heads trapped in a drinking bottle Timmeh is mad at Willy Wonka Patypus has identity crisis Eric Harris gets his first handgun
"Man offering joint to sloth" dustcatchered in less than one hour. It's obviously not working. Or how else you want to describe picture where man is offering joint to a sloth?
