They're confusing and unfair.
I love how everyone immediately jumps to "REMOVE IT, IT'S NOT FAIR" instead of "Please tweak it so it's fair".
Excuse the hyperbole, but seriously. Reed is pretty clearly looking for feedback and needs things play tested so he can decide how to make it fair. New features aren't automatically going to be perfect. ._.
Keep the multipliers, but don't display them in-game. One thumb up will show as one thumb up, but the multiplier will turn it into 3 XP, for example.
Only the person who drew/described the panel should see that s/he's completed a dustcatchered panel.
I disagree completely... I think the multipliers are totally fair... It fixes a huge dustcatcher problem that everyone has been whining about.
A potential tweak: keep multipliers, show the XP in parentheses, but also show the number of thumbs ups, and perhaps balance the multipliers so they aren't too overpowered. Also, I still like the idea of showing difficulty in the queue.
At least correct the math!
Maybe it wouldn't be so confusing!
Correction: One bonus star actually means: thumbs up x 2! (Double the thumbs!) Riigght? And two bonus stars means: thumbs up x 3! Triple the thumbs! And so on and so forth!
Namely as of now it displays for one star "Bonus x1" ...but we all know anything times one is itself!?!? This supposed "bonus x 1" clearly actually doubles points.
And two stars says "bonus x 2", whereas here, the points are clearly tripled, and not multiplied by 2 (doubled).
If it were really "bonus x2" why does it increase in multiples of 3! YOU CANNOT DIVIDE EVEN NUMBERS BY THREE rageface of crying
So please fix "bonus x n" to "bonus x n+1"
Can only speak for myself but it would make my brain stop imploding every time I see the stars.
I see a potential problem here: http://drawception.com/viewgame/69Dc6t8WEc/repo-the-genetic-opera/. Panels 2 and 4 are essentially the same drawing with the same prompt. Honeybee (panel 2) was just unfortunate that the first person to see her panel knew what it was. I don't know what you could do to prevent this.
OMG. Life isn't fair. This game is in beta. Helpful suggestions instead of beating your hands on the floor and screaming "it's not fair" would be more useful.
I agree with Ackter that the multiplier should only be shown to the player gaining the points. Kind of like how you only see your own points total now.
And probably the points bonanza should be scaled back a tad.
I guess I dont understand the concept. Its a reward for not changing your style of play at all, which means randomly, some people will get some huge bonuses.
If a panel is about to be deleted, but you decide to save it, sure... have a reward. But rewarding people for just drawing something they chose to draw without knowing it was a dustcatcher candidate makes no sense to me. I mean its really no different than just randomly doubling people's scores. Who knows, maybe that's next so people will submit more panels in hopes of proccing random free votes.
It's not really a free bonus, though. You have to draw the panel and do it well enough that people upvote it.
I think it is good it is not shown. I imagine if they were shown, people would start drawing more descriptions that are really, I mean really bad, stupid, racist or even trollish just because they want more XPs.
Except they're more likely to get reported for drawing than they are to get upvotes.
Well, that depends on how you draw it.
I think if someone draws a great picture for bad caption, they deserve the extra points.
I think instead of it being a multiplier it should just add xp 1 extra xp for 1 star, 2 for 2, 3 for 3. I understand and support extra xp for would-be dustcatchers but multiplying it is a bit excessive. It works out fine if it's a relatively unseen game where the highest panel only gets say 4 votes or so, but if one of these mutipliers ends up in a top game where 40-50 thumbs-up are being given per panel... well... 50x3 is A LOT. It will be way out of proportion to the other players equally awesome panels as well. I think just having an extra 3 xp free would be fine. Even if it had to be changed to say 3, 6, 9 xp instead, that'd be better imo. Sorry for the bad spelling and grammer too tired to fix.
Except that wouldn't be a problem if it only showed the raw likes and the XP bonus was only revealed to the person who got it.
@Several_People, Why should the # of times someone has skipped a prompt before I see it effect my points once I draw it? I chose to draw it of my own free will, the bonus makes no sense. I just drew "Hulk Hogan" and its a multiplier. I didnt draw that one because I thought it might be a dustcatcher, in fact I'm shocked it is. Thats why I think the way its implemented its just a random reward and not an incentive to draw hard panels. The only way you're going to get me to do a drawing I wouldn't normally do is to let me know that it's about to be deleted if I don't do it. Right now everyone just does what they're comfortable with as usual and sometimes you get your points doubled. Its just stupid.
FWIW, I think it's a GREAT fix for what, as others have pointed out, has been whined about since dustcatchers were created.
Example (only somewhat self-serving) I recently started a game (something I very rarely do... I think I've started all of 2 games in the past) -- I knew the initial cue was likely to elicit a "Huh?" from 80% or more of users. I was hoping that the artists who know a little bit of art history might be attracted though, and I wasn't at all disappointed by the results.
For those concerned that this will somehow encourage NSFW captioning, I'm sorry, but I don't see the proof of that. NSFW captions and images (even artfully drawn ones) get removed on a regular basis... maybe even too regularly, but then I'm not directly liable for any damages participation here might have for those whose employers have no sense of anything real.
Show me a few examples of actual problems and I might share your concern. But I'm hoping with this example, at least, to point out a case where this did actually work to make a game better. Then again, maybe I was just lucky and barely missed having the game dustcatchered before it started?
I agree, you get a random bonus which depends more on which of the group of people sharing your tiny pool of games happen to have been online lately, rather than innate difficulty of the caption. Better than them being lost for this reason though.
And do stop using the word "whining" for people who openly say when an idea is bad. The least productive thing I can imagine for Reed is a bunch of yes men who profess a love for every idea regardless.
I would prefer that the points not display when browsing games, only the number of upvotes. Let the points show up on our profiles. I kind of like to see how many upvotes I get, but now on my bounty games, I have to divide my total by 2, 3, or 4 to find out how many actual votes I got. Not horrible, just kind of annoying.
I like the bounty system, although I think two stars should be the cap. The 4x multiplier (3 stars) is way too generous in my opinion.
